For this assignment Miriam & I were paired up together. The brief was to design a set of food symbols to be used on menus, advertisements & signage for a new food deli chain.
We needed to create symbols to represent the following foods:
Beef, pasta, cheese, Asian, chicken, pizza, pork, salad, seafood, lamb, Indian, dessert.
I immediately began creating a series of drawings that made the different food items into funny caricatures with amusing slogans. We decided to go with this theme of a young, quirky, funky, fun, unapologetically irreverent restaurant with an emphasis on humour and a novelty factor. We felt that this backdrop would really lend itself the fun and original character designs and would set the tone for everything else. Examples of my rough work included.
We considered how the menu could look and wondered about the possibility of it being something other than a rectangular shaped piece of card. We wanted to explore whether we could continue the novelty factor with a menu that was anything but standard. Options we considered were having the menu take the form of a deck of cards with one of the food characters on each card. Or having the menu consist of a physical object like an oversized dice with menu options on the different sides, or a rubix cube, each little square being a menu item…
We also considered the idea of using an origami fortune teller.
Another idea was that of a board game type menu like a circular twister board with the food symbols around the edge and a spinner in the middle. We decided to proceed with this and see if it was workable….
